Supreme Court Expected To Deliver Decision In Oland Case This Week

Dennis Oland will find out this week whether the country’s highest court will be reviewing the quashing of his second-degree murder conviction in the 2011 death of his father, Richard Oland.

The Crown has appealed the overturning of the conviction last fall to the Supreme Court of Canada and the defence has filed a cross appeal, seeking an acquittal.

The decision on whether or not leave to appeal will be granted is going to be released on Thursday morning at 10:45am.

At the beginning of this year, Justice William Grant at the Court of Queens Bench in New Brunswick adjourned the scheduling of Dennis Oland’s new trial date until after the outcome of the application to the Supreme Court.

Oland is currently out on bail on conditions pending his new trial.

Back in March of this year, the Supreme Court ruled that New Brunswick’s top court was wrong to deny Oland bail while he awaited appeal of his conviction.

Oland had spent about 10 months in custody before he was released on bail following his successful conviction appeal in October of 2016.
