The province is now providing access to Mifegymiso, also known as the abortion pill, to New Brunswickers free of charge.
Heath Canada authorized the drug in July of 2015 and it became available on the market in January.
Heath Minister Victor Boudreau says New Brunswick is proud to be the first province to create a program that provides universal access to the abortion pill.
The program will enable any patient with a valid Medicare card to receive the drug free of charge.
Almost three decades have passed since abortion was decriminalized in Canada and Boudreau says those who wish to access this medical service still face many roadblocks.
Boudreau says making the drug available free of charge ensures financial barriers do not stand in the way of New Brunswickers’ right to choose.
