Moncton’s East End Pool Receives Provincial Support

The Gallant government has announced a $500,000 investment to help replace the outdoor pool at the Moncton East Youth Centre.

The City of Moncton has already committed $1.1 million but that still leaves a shortfall of $700,000.

Mayor Dawn Arnold says city staff will be asked to find the rest of the money for the $2.3 million project.

“There are different possibilities. I mean there may be projects that don’t go ahead in the time that we have seen before. They are the experts. They are going to come back to us with a variety of options,” she notes.

Although the mayor initially didn’t support a new pool because the current one sits on a flood plain, Arnold says she supports the will of council who have determined this is a priority.

The director of the Moncton East Youth Centre says the provincial funding puts them another step closer to a new pool.

Pikey French says she would like to see all of city council get behind this.

“Hopefully our mayor… the three councillors… who are opposed to this project will realize the importance of this project and proceed,” she says.

The tender has gone out and it’s ready to be awarded but Mayor Arnold says all of the funding must be in place first before construction can begin.
