Sunday Shopping Restrictions Lifted In Sussex

Residents in the Sussex area now have more options when it comes to Sunday shopping.

Council recently passed a bylaw allowing businesses to open whenever they want on Sundays, instead of from noon to 5 p.m. only.

Scott Hatcher, the town’s chief administrative officer, tells us they received a lot of input from residents and businesses alike.

“We believe that those surveys and the feedback that council received was that the change where retailers would set their own hours was what the majority of the community sought,” says Hatcher.

“[Businesses] wanted flexibility in deciding their own hours of operation, but in the feedback letter that they sent to mayor and council, many had no intention of opening on Sunday.”

Hatcher says most businesses have chosen to open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. but others have kept their hours the same or remained closed.

Many municipalities already allowed businesses to set their own hours on Sundays, including Saint John, Moncton and Fredericton.
