Lonnie West has been riding since he was 8 years old, and he is one of three bull riding brothers, “Growing up, you graduate from steer riding to junior bull riding to bigger bulls as you go. Once you turn 18, you can ride the bigger ones.”

He says this is a sport that you can make a living at, “A guy who is winning a lot, you can make $450, 000 to $500, 000 a year. Moncton counts towards our PBR world finals. In October, those who have enough points at the end can get to Vegas. Whoever wins that title can win a bonus one million dollars.”

West says there are around 30 riders who are on the Monster Energy Tour, and everyone gets one chance.

“You have to make eight seconds to advance. Half comes from the bull and half comes from you. The top ten scores come back for a second round later that night, until you are crowned champion.”

West says bull riding is very popular out West, but the sport continues to grow and he would like to see more events in Atlantic Canada.
