Premier Raises Concerns Over PC Leader’s Willingness To Support ‘Fracking’

Premier Brian Gallant is offering a response to the Opposition leader’s position on fracking.

Progressive Conservative leader Blaine Higgs recently said if his party is elected in September, he would lift the moratorium in certain regions, if requested.

Gallant was not surprised by this.

“Blaine Higgs specifically is very focused on the wealthy and big businesses, he’s not focused on communities, families, and ensuring that we grow the economy in a sustainable way that protects the environment,” says Gallant.

He goes on to say he would like to ask Higgs a few questions if he had the opportunity.

“He should clarify how he would determine consent, how he would determine boundaries, is it based on the company’s lease?” asks Gallant. “And of course I think that New Brunswickers recognize that if he’s willing to hydraulically frack in one community, he would definitely be willing to do it in another.”

Gallant says the Liberals are giving New Brunswickers what they have asked for.

“New Brunswickers want us to create jobs so our young people can stay here, people that have unfortunately left the province can come back here,” he says.

Gallant concluded, saying citizens want “us to grow the economy in a responsible way, in a way that we are creating opportunities and protecting the environment at the same time.”
