NB Flu Season Started Much Earlier Than Usual

The flu season is coming to an end in New Brunswick and the Department of Health is reporting a busy season which started much earlier than usual.

This year the province was faced with both Influenza A and Influenza B circulating at the same time according to Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Jennifer Russell.

From last August until mid-April, stats show 1200 were affected by Influenza A and about 1100 by Influenza B.

Sixty people were admitted to the ICU and 32 deaths were reported.

Over the last month, Dr. Russell adds influenza activity has been stable but higher than expected.

Although it appears this season had a higher number of cases, Dr. Russell notes this year’s flu season started five to six weeks earlier than usual so it’s hard to compare year over year.
