Moncton Mom Shares Experiences With Autism In The Classroom

A Moncton woman has been sharing her stories, in an effort to raise awareness about Autism.

Lorri Meunier’s son Evan is in grade 3 at Northrop Frye school and he has Autism.

In an effort to help the kids understand the disorder, she has been visiting the school each year, “To explain a little bit about what Evan might go through, and I make it really clear with the kids that there are some of the experiences that my son might have. I also read a book about Autism to the kids and I open up the floor at the end for questions and answers.”

She admits she might not always have the answers, but she likes to keep the kids informed based on her first hand experiences as a mom with an Autistic son.

“If they have any questions or if they are wondering why kids may be a little bit different from them, I want to open up that floor. When I were growing up, we knew that there were some kids who went to school who were different, but no one really told us why.”

Meunier has been speaking to Evan’s classes since Kindergarten, “I will often ask the kids if they have heard of Autism. Maybe some kids have siblings of neighbours who have it, and in Kindergarten I found that a few hands would go up. Every year that I do this, I find that more and more hands are going up.”

The 3rd annual Walk for Autism will be held on April 28th in Moncton.
