Ludwig Introduces Motion To Protect Endangered Whales

The Member of Parliament for Southwest New Brunswick has turned her sights to the open water and the creatures within it.

Karen Ludwig introducing Motion 154 in Ottawa today, which would mandate the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans to create a study on endangered whales in Canada.

In a video posted to Youtube, Ludwig says steps need to be taken to protect the right, beluga, and killer whales in Canada.

“Although my interests in the protection and recovery of whales was initially based on my experience locally, the dramatic loss of seventeen North Atlantic Right whales in 2017 heightened my interest resulting in my private member’s motion.”

The whale populations are currently 450 for the North Atlantic Right whales, 900 of the St. Lawrence Estuary belugas are left , and the numbers for Southern Resident killer whales is down to only 76.

The motion asks the Standing Committee of Fisheries and Oceans to consider a number of things, including steps to better protect and aid the recovery of those species, and to find immediate and long-term improvements that will limit the impact from humans on those species.
