Shannex Donates $100K For UNB Nursing Scholarships

UNB nursing students who are standouts in the area of elder care and need a little financial help could receive it with the help of new scholarships.

Shannex has donated $100,000 to establish the Shannex New Brunswick Scholarships which are each valued at a $3750 a year and available to students in UNB’s sites in Saint John, Moncton and Fredericton.

There will be three scholarships a year, one for each of the locations and selection will be made based on academic performance and excellence in gerontological nursing. The students will be eligible starting in September.

“We have a sponsorship of three students…and really trying to support nursing students that have shown an interest in long-term care,” says Shannex CEO Jason Shannon.

Shannex’s contribution is part of UNB’s $110-million fundraising campaign called It Begins Here which started about three years ago. President Eddy Campbell says they’re approaching that goal.

“We’re really close, we’re getting to the end,” says Campbell. “Hope to have a big celebration of accomplishing our goals in September and I’m certain we will make it.”

One half of the campaign goal, $55-million, would go to help out students in various ways including student financial support.
