Gallant Gov’t Boosts Funding For Transition Houses

The Gallant government has announced the province’s 13 transition houses for women and children are getting an increase in funding.

The overall budget will increase this year from $3 million to $3.3 million, an increase of 11 percent.

Patty Michaud, executive director of the Miramichi Emergency Centre for Women, says this announcement means a lot.

“It’s been 10 years since there has been any kind of increase in our yearly budget. So it means a lot. I really look forward to working with social development and talking to my board of directors and seeing what we can do. But it’s great news,” she notes.

Michaud adds transition houses provide an essential service and hundreds of women access their services seeking help from domestic violence.
