A team of firefighters from Riverview Fire and Rescue managed to bring a man back to safety during the storm last night.
At around 7:30 last night, they were notified by 911, that a man had wandered out onto the snowmobile trails on foot.
Luckily, he found a warming shack for shelter.
Deputy Chief in Training Robin True says they responded with an off road rescue unit.
“We have an ATV and a UTV, and luckily they both have tracks on them, which makes it easier to go through the snow. We had people on call who are very familiar with the trail system and were able to get out to the warming shack and pick the individual up.”
True says it is challenging working in heavy snow with whiteout conditions, “We do have GPS units on our vehicles, so that does assist us in locating where we are and where we’re going to, but still not ideal to be out on the trails in those conditions. We encourage people not to go out onto the trails under extremely adverse conditions like we had last night.”
The man was taken to hospital by ambulance for assessment, but True says it’s believed he was in good condition.
