Homelessness Blamed On Lack Of Rooming Houses and Drug Culture

Moncton has lost 44 rooming houses in the past eight years which means hundreds of affordable units in the city have disappeared.

The executive director of Harvest House Atlantic believes that’s partly the reason why the shelter has been so overcrowded during the winter.

Cal Maskery thinks another factor is a changing drug culture with many addicts showing up addicted to opioids or crystal meth – sometimes even in the middle of the day.

“Drugs will bring people to a place of homelessness because when a person gets full-blown in their addiction, all of their funds have gone out the window. Places like Harvest House, we are the first step for people wanting to get help,” he notes.

With support from the recent fundraiser Spring2Action, Maskery says more beds will be added this spring for both men and women.
