Université De Moncton Creates Scholarship Fund From RCMP Penalty Over 2014 Shooting

The Université De Moncton has created a scholarship fund with money received from the RCMP.

It is in recognition of Constables Douglas Larche, David Ross, and Fabrice Gevaudan who were killed in 2014.

The fund comes from a $300,000 grant received from the RCMP, as part of a penalty handed down this year for failing to properly equip and train frontline officers in relation to the June 2014 shootings.

The first of the scholarships will be awarded in the 2019-2020 academic year.

Acting President and Vice-Chancellor Jacques Paul Couturier says the scholarships will lessen the financial burden on students who are deeply involved in their community, just as these Constables were.

The number and monetary value of the scholarships will be determined by a U de M selection committee.

Recipients will be chosen based on two criteria, they must be enrolled as full-time students at the Moncton Campus of U de M and show volunteer commitment to the Greater Moncton community.
