Bessborough School Students Hold Annual Turkey Trot

It was a chilly morning for a walk, but the over 550 students from Bessborough School didn’t let the cold bother them.

Led by a fire truck escort, they held their annual Turkey trot to the St. George Blvd. fire station to make a donation to the Sue Stultz and Moncton Firefighters Turkey Drive.

Principal Nick Mattatall says the students carried 150 turkeys to the firehall this year, “The students take shifts, especially for our Kindergarten kids. They are kind of heavy, but they have the bags to carry them. They will pass them off and work as a team. This is our highlight of the year. Everyone has a charity and this seems to be one of the big ones for us.”

Grade 8 student Olivia Kikkert says it’s nice to know that they are giving back, “There are a lot of families that don’t have turkeys and it is nice to know they will have something to eat.”

Teachers, students and parents helped to raise over $2700 to help purchase the turkeys this year.

“We have corporate donors, McInnes Cooper gave us $1500. The kids do popcorn days and this year they made turkey buttons and sold them for one dollar each. There are dress up days and the staff kick in $500. All of the proceeds went to purchase turkeys,” Mattatall says.

Grade 8 student Nev Dubois says, “It is nice to know that you are giving back to families in need, and they have something on Christmas day.”

4132 birds are needed this year for the annual turkey drive.
