Saint John’s Police Chief Gives Credit To The Feds and the Province On Pot Legalization Prep

Saint John police chief John Bates giving kudos to the Federal and provincial government on how they are assisting municipalities as they prepare for the legalization of marijuana expected this summer.

Chief Bates tells us funds have been set aside specifically to help police officers train for this new reality.

“Where they will standard field sobriety test officer training, drug recognition expert training, we are, I think, ahead of the game here in New Brunswick. We’ve been very proactive” Bates said.

Bates serves on a committee where they are trying to align the training and the needs across the province.

He notes that the legalization of marijuana is not just a policing issue but there are by-law enforcement issues and concerns about how it will impact municipalities.
