Marissa Shephard’s trial for first degree murder and arson is underway with the Crown having delivered their opening address.
Prosecutor Annie St. Jacques began by outlining what happened on the night of December 16th, 2015, when 18-year old Baylee Wylie was killed.
She explains how the Crown will call firefighters and police who responded to a triplex on 96 Sumac Street, who will testify about the separate fires in the middle unit.
They are also expected to discuss the discovery of Wylie’s body under a box spring in the living room of that same unit.
St. Jacques adds further evidence will be brought forward by neighbours, testifying they heard sounds consistent with someone being beaten.
St. Jacques: “You will see and hear disturbing evidence concerning the death of a young man. We are confident after you hear the totality of evidence, you will be convinced of the guilt of Marissa Shephard on both counts.”

St. Jacques was careful to stress what she mentioned in her opening address is not to be treated as evidence by the jury, as that evidence will in fact come later when witnesses testify on the stand.

The trial will not continue tomorrow because of an impending storm, and may resume Friday, weather permitting.
