To help celebrate its 60th anniversary, Oulton College students and staff raised $35,000 over two years to help build a school at an orphanage in Haiti.
Education advisor Heath Johnson was part of a small delegation who recently visited the impoverished country to officially open the school.
He says it was very rewarding to see three new classrooms, a library, a kindergarten and an art room.
Johnson says everyone was grateful and the new rooms were utilized practically overnight.
With about 150 children and only 10 staff at the orphanage, Johnson notes children were starving for attention and you would have a child holding your hand, on your lap or even on your shoulders at any given time.
Prior to the school expansion at the orphanage, Johnson adds conditions were so cramped 20 children were often in a room no larger than a walk-in closet.
