According to the 2016 census, New Brunswick is the only province to have its population go down over the past five years.
Stats Canada reports the population in Saint John declined by 3.6 % from 2011 to 2016.
The number of people living in Saint John dropped to more than 67 thousand from just over 70,000 in 2011.
By contrast, the population in Moncton grew by 4.1 percent to become the largest city in the province at just under 72 thousand.
Fredericton also recorded an increase in its population.
The country as a whole grew by 1.7 million, which is the strongest growth of all the G7 countries.
