A new bus is helping veterans maintain a social life, and stay involved in their community.
Veterans Health Centre Nurse Manager Isabelle Martin says the vets use this replacement bus to go to both medical appointments, as well as apple picking and fishing.
She says this bus gives them the freedom to live instead of just exist.
“Their families are far sometimes, so it’s really great for them to be able to go out and see what’s going on, see how the town is changing, see what new things are going up and being able to interact with other people,” says Martin.
She says the bus is used for everything from medical appointments to social outings.
“Because you see them, and they’re sitting in their rooms, and then you see them out with other people, they’re interacting, they’re even doing what we do, having coffee and gossiping and doing all the things that we enjoy still,” says Martin.
She adds the previous bus was 17 years old, and repairs and maintenance were becoming quite expensive.
