A north end YMCA is getting closer to reality.
CEO Zane Korytko says after roughly two years in the process, they have now hired a company to do what is called a functional program, “They’ll take all of the ideas of what we want to be able to put into the centre to see how feasible it is, as well as to come up with a ball park budget and also look at how operationally efficient this building could be.”
Moncton will be the first ever to have this hybrid style YMCA, “In the case of the north end, we’d be looking at something in the neighbourhood of approximately 30 to 35 thousand square feet. To put that into perspective, the current facility on War Veterans Avenue is about 70 thousand square feet.”
The north end centre also wouldn’t have a pool.
Korytko says there has been a hope to get a centre for the north end for the last ten years, but the YMCA has only stepped in to help move the process along over the last two years. He says, “We would be hopeful of a late 2018 or early 2019 opening date.”
There are a couple of options for land, and Korytko says they have been working with the city on that issue, “We will be meeting with representatives from the city to look into the issue of where the centre will go, and hopefully we will have a decision within the next few weeks on where specifically this centre will be built.”
