Local Group Finds Home For Fire Victim

A local organization has found a new home for a fire victim, who remains in hospital, recovering from smoke inhalation and burns.

Kimberley Melanson suffers from MS and needed a wheelchair accessible apartment to move into.

She was injured after a fire in her basement apartment on Church Street.

Founder of Big Hearts, Small City Jason Surette says it was a difficult search, but as of Friday, they had secured a new home for her, “The apartment company was gracious enough to provide December’s rent for free, and I worked with them to cover the damage deposit, so essentially they can move in with no money down.”

Big Hearts, Small City also paid off an NB Power bill for Melanson, “It was preventing her from going into an apartment that required her to have power in her own name. That was preventing her from a lot of different options, so we paid her old power bill off in full,” Surette adds.

They already have quite a few household items for when she moves in, “Just this past week, the family has received quite a few donations, from family and friends, so they should be pretty much set to go. But if anyone wants to make any donations, they can be used for future fire victims, Surette says.
