Christmas Food Box Program Needs More Donations

The deadline is fast approaching for the annual Christmas Food Box Program which aims to ensure needy families in Metro Moncton have a turkey and all the trimmings over the holiday period.

Food Depot Alimentaire executive director Chantal Senecal says the number of food boxes needed has risen to 1800 this year.

“So we have gone up by 50 boxes this year. I hope it will be enough because there has been quite an increase in the need for families in our community,” she notes.

Many community organizations close over the holidays and the Christmas Food Box, valued at $80 this year, contains enough food to last a family about a week.

Monetary donations can be made at Omista Credit Unions, the Advance Savings Credit Union or at Food Depot Alimentaire.

Volunteers are also needed to help deliver the boxes on Wednesday, December 21st from the Moncton Coliseum.

Food Depot Alimentaire President Dale Hicks is releasing an update on the state of the Campaign.

As of Saturday, he says 950 out of 1800 food boxes are paid for.

As well, on Friday they collected $3,747 and 105 pounds of food at the David Myles event at Champlain Place.

Hicks says they were also given a $10,000 donation from the New Brunswick Police Association Charity Hockey Game on Friday.
