The Shediac Fire Department is being honoured by PETA – People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals – following the recent rescue of a moose from the frozen Shediac River.
Volunteer firefighters came to the aid of a young moose which had fallen through the ice last Saturday morning.
PETA spokesperson Rachel Bellis says a Compassionate Fire Department Award is being presented for their bravery and determination.
“These rescue workers have set a tremendous example for all of us, that we must always come to the aid of an animal in need,” she notes.
Firefighters broke up the ice with axes and led the animal to the shore.

Besides the award, PETA is sending the Shediac Fire Department a box of vegan cookies, a letter of congratulations, and a copy of The Engine 2 Diet, a firefighter’s plan for staying in shape by eating plant-based meals.
