The City of Moncton is conducting a pilot project in the New Year to lift the downtown parking ban when conditions warrant.
Communications Officer Andre Cormier says starting January 1st, under certain conditions, the City may waive the overnight parking ban in the downtown core.
“An area between Vaughan Harvey and King Street, and St George Street to Assomption Boulevard, if the conditions warrant it, people will be allowed to park overnight in the area,” says Cormier.
Cormier adds the decision to lift the ban is based on several factors.
“When the restrictions will be lifted, it’ll be when there’s no planned snow clearing activity in the area, and the forecasted weather will show no snow in the immediate future,” says Cormier.
He adds there will be a link on the City of Moncton homepage to see if the ban has been lifted.
“With this pilot project, the onus will be on the motorist to see if the restrictions have been lifted,” says Cormier. “And essentially otherwise people shoud asssume the restrictions are being enforced.”
Cormier says with the downtown centre opening in a couple years, this was the perfect opportunity to test a new approach for easing overnight parking restrictions.
Currently, the City implements an overnight parking ban across the City from December 1st, until April 15th.
