Moncton Mayor Defends Cuts To Community Grants

An explanation form Mayor Dawn Arnold for the over $177, 000 in cuts from the budget to community grants.

She took to Facebook last week, and stated that through deliberations, staff and council worked hard to ensure that many services including fire and safety services, police, roads, sidewalks and snow removal, and garbage collection were not cut. This year, they knew that there would have to be cuts to community grants.

Every year $3.8 million is earmarked for assistance to community groups, youth food banks, recreation and culture..Arnold says it was a tough decision, but they felt places like the Capitol Theatre could withstand a one year only cut of $50, 000.

She says Council would not have accepted this, if they felt there was any risk to the Capitol, Sistema was also cut by $25, 000.
