Homecoming Festival Marks 250th Anniversary Of Moncton’s First Families

A historic three-day celebration during the upcoming long weekend will mark the 250th anniversary arrival of the first families who settled in the region.

The Moncton Permanent Settlers Association is hosting the Homecoming Festival with free activities for the whole family.

Coordinator Robyn Greene says the original eight German families arrived here by sloop via Pennsylvania on June 3, 1766.

“Koppel, Jones, Lutz, Trites, Ricker, Somers, Wortman and Steeves were the original families. They arrived and they received land grants and they started at Hall’s Creek and they went almost to Salisbury,” she notes.

At Riverfront Park on Saturday and Sunday there will be children’s games, food vendors, arts and crafts, genealogy tents and live entertainment.

A fireworks display will take place on Sunday night at 10pm.

The festival will wrap up on Monday afternoon with a family picnic at Centennial Park.
