Reported crime in Canada, as measured by both the Crime Severity Index and the crime rate itself, increased last year according to Stats Canada. This marked the first rise in police reported crime in 12 years.
New Brunswick saw a 12 per cent increase in crimes reported to police with a 21 per cent increase in Moncton’s crime rate. Saint John was well below the Canadian average as the crime rate in the city fell by 2 per cent.
The rise in the crime severity rate nationally was primarily a result of more incidents of fraud, breaking and entering, robbery and murder.
