The Natural And Cheaper Way To Combat Climate Change

The Nature Conservancy welcomes the Trudeau Government’s target of protecting 10 per cent of marine and coastal ecosystems by 2020. Right now, the Musquash Estuary is the only Marine Protected Area in the province.

Paula Noel of the Nature Conservancy says having more marine protected areas along the coastline is a good way to adapt to more extreme weather events because the natural habitat absorbs the energy of storms and storm surges to mitigate the risk of flooding.

Dr Julian Roberts, an Ocean Governance Adviser in the Commonwealth Secretariat’s Economic and Legal Section says coastal habitats also play a critical role in regulating the climate through the storage and sequestration of carbon.
