Two Separate Projects To Help Alleviate Flooding In Moncton

The City of Moncton and CN Rail are working on two separate construction projects this summer to help reduce the risk of flooding along Jonathan Creek.

A $5 million project to fix the spillway and culvert connecting the creek to Jones Lake is underway with cost sharing between the city and the province.

City engineer Alcide Richard says these projects have been in the making for some time now.

“We’ve always said we have to start downstream and work our way up. We’ve been working together for the last 10 plus years”, he notes.

Meantime, CN Rail spokesperson Patrick Waldron says excavation work for a new culvert is now underway at the mouth of the creek where it empties into the Petitcodiac River.

The $7.6 million cost of that project is being shared between the City and CN Rail and should be completed by this fall.

A major flood occurred in September 1999 and more recently in December 2014 which impacted homes and businesses in the Jones Lake area.
