Friends and family will gather this week to say a final goodbye to former UFC fighter Ryan Jimmo of Saint John, who was killed in a hit and run out West late last month.
The 34-year-old grew up in west Saint John and attended St. Malachy’s Memorial High School where he played football and was president of the chess club. He started amateur bodybuilding after breaking his leg from karate in 2004. Jimmo was taught by his father, a 5th degree black belt who competed in Japan twice and was ranked 5th in the world in his style. He had most recently competed in the light heavyweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
His obituary reads: “in everything he pursued he sought its purist form and committed himself with a passion and drive incomprehensible to most.” UFC issued a statement on Jimmo’s death saying they were saddened to hear of his passing and gave condolences to his loved ones.
Two men have been charged in connection with Jimmo’s death. Police say he died after being run over by a vehicle in a parking lot in Edmonton after a brief argument and the two men did not know Jimmo.
A funeral is taking place for Jimmo at Our Lady of Assumption Church on Thursday at noonhour and visitation is happening on Tuesday and Wednesday from 2pm to 8pm at Brenan’s Bay View Funeral Home.
