The Federal Health Minister speaking to 600 nurses gathering at the national conference in Saint John, New Brunswick.
She says the healthcare system has not adjusted to the new demographic reality of our aging population and it’s hitting some parts of the country more than others.
She says an older population doesn’t necessarily translate into a higher demand for more healthcare services but it will mean a proportionally higher need for
end of life care.
Philpott says 70 per cent of Canadians lack access to quality palliative care especially in remote regions.
She says as part of the new Health Accord, Ottawa has pledged to invest $3 billion dollars to deliver better home care services which would include palliative care.
