Sometimes a parent has to consider what is best for their child, when it comes to the school they attend.
The city is divided into catchment areas and a school is designated to each one.
If you decide the designated school isn’t right, then you will have to apply for them to attend another.
Director of Schools for Anglophone East Dianne (dee-anne) Gillis says sometimes there are extenuating situations, In those situations, we would be aware of that child’s needs, whether it is because they are on a personalized learning plan or they have a particular situation, that makes it so they can’t attend their home school.”
Gillis says whether or not a student is accepted at an out of bounds school, is based on whether or not there is space.
She says, sometimes applications will be approved right away, while others, may not get a confirmation until August or September, “If you’re in grade 4 and you’ve been at the out of bounds school for a year or two, and the Principal knows that there is a lot of room in the school for grade 5 for next year, then they may fill out your form before the end of the school year and approve you.”
Parents must keep in mind, at an out of bounds school, they will be responsible for the transportation of the child, and if the class becomes full, they could be asked to their home school.
