A unanimous vote elevated a veteran Moncton City Councillor to the role of Deputy Mayor for one year.
Blair Lawrence was nominated by Councillor Pierre Boudreau, and acclaimed by his peers.
In his nomination speech, Councillor Boudreau said Lawrence is very competent, perfectly bilingual, and well suited to the responsibilities of the position.
The Deputy Mayor is responsible for taking over whenever the Mayor is unable to fulfill their duties.
That includes a Mayor with conflict of interest, or otherwise absent.
The role also comes with a small increase in salary above regular Councillors, but well below that of Mayor.
