432 species of birds including the Red-headed Woodpecker are listed on the State of Birds Watch List for North America because of population loss, range reduction and threats to habitat.
Andrew Holland of the Nature Conservancy says the endangered piping plover and semipalmated sandpiper that come into the bay of Fundy are on the watch list in New Brunswick. Nearly 20% of wetland birds are on the Watch List. Wetland loss has accelerated by 140% since 2004 in North America.
According to Holland, atlantic puffins, warblers, northern gannet and sparrows are doing okay.
He says one reason 78 birds in Canada are on the watch list is their habitats being destroyed which he argues points out the need to conserve more wetlands and coastal shoreline because you can’t save birds without saving their habitats.
