Two big surprises, and four new animals for the Magnetic Hill Zoo for their African section.
Jamie Carson is the Animal Care Foreman at the Zoo, and he says they are very excited to show off their new Serval Cats and Dromedary Camels.
He adds the two Serval Cats are a small, medium size African Cat with beautiful colouring and spots.
“It’s a male and a female, they’re here at the zoo, we’ve spent the last several months through the winter to get them used to each other in supervised visits,” says Carons. “They’re together now, they’re both intact meaning neither one are spayed or neutered so we’re very much hoping for baby Serval cats later in the year.”
He says the Serval Cats are quite different than the big cats they currently have.
“These guys are smaller, they’re very beautifully coloured, they are really neat, where the other cats are large, stocky, heavy looking, they’re sleek, they’ve got long legs and kind of a sleeker, more exotic looking pattern on their body,” says Carson. “They’re quite interactive.”
He adds trainers have been working with the cats since they arrived, and they are quite accustomed to humans.
Carson says the camels are still babies, around 300 pounds, and can grow to over 1,000 pounds.
He says the one year old camels are the biggest secret they’ve been holding on to since last Fall while renovating their new outdoor home.
“Renovations were completed about a couple weeks ago, they’re out, they’re happy it’s an awesome spot to see them,” says Carons. “They’re cool and everyone’s gonna like them, and the viewing for the public is in one of the best areas of the whole Zoo, it’s in our African Boardwalk, you can walk over and see them directly.”
The new exhibits are open and ready for the public, so Carson recommends everyone come out and visit!
