Push Continues To Turn Former Moncton High Into Cultural Centre

Time and money are wasting as the old Moncton High sits empty, that according to one of the founders of the MH Renaissance group.

Their campaign is back into full swing as they push for the building to be converted into a cultural centre. They took a break during the municipal election campaign.

Dennis Cochrane says they’ve heard that the Moncton Library doesn’t want to make the move, .but it would make more financial sense if they do, instead of staying in the Medavie Blue Cross centre, “They are there for the long term and the rent is a dollar a month, but the common area charges for heat, light, taxes and so on are $567, 000 a year. We’re saying we can give the equal or better space for the same amount of money, and access to free parking.”

Cochrane says it’s a shame the amount of money that is being spent while the building isn’t being used,”The building has been sitting there empty for a year and a half and you can see some signs of vandalism. The province is spending between $300 and $400 thousand a year for heat and security, and that money is just going to a building.”

He says if the City makes the final decision not to move the Library, that’s fine, but ultimately they want to know what should go there instead because the city has already gone on record as supporting a motion to repurpose the former high school.

Cochrane says, “We just want to keep the project alive until the City makes some decisions.”
