GMFA Focuses On Safety First For Players

It’s safety first for the Greater Moncton Football Association.

They’re a few months away from their fall football season, but they are constantly looking at ways to make the game safer for all those participating.

Vice President Dennis Ronan says things have changed a lot from when he played football in the 70’s, “We were taught fundamentally to strike with force with your forehead to the ball carrier’s knee. A very effective way to bring a guy down, but almost always you were going to get some damage to your neck or brain. Now, we’ve completely taken that out of there and we want to build athletes first.”

Derrick Stenhouse is with player development says “We’ve been doing things over the past seven or eight years with safe contact with form fit tackling. We’re getting everyone involved. CFL, and the NFL, definitely, with all of the lawsuits. You have to realize, if you don’t change, it’s not going to be around much longer.”

The Association is now focusing on mandatory training for coaches in Safe Contact, and they’re developing the skills for kids, offering them the training first, to be able to do things physically.
