Prince Edward Island will begin offering abortions at the end of the year.
Premier Wade MacLauchlan made the historic announcement yesterday.
The province was facing a lawsuit that argued PEI was discriminating by not offering equal access to health care services for women.
This will be the first time in 35 years that abortions have been permitted in PEI.
It’s also the last province in the country to offer abortions.
Previously women would have to go to new Brunswick or Nova Scotia to have the procedure performed.
Prime Minister Trudeau also issued a statement on the decision, saying “a woman’s right to choose is a fundamental right in the country.”
I welcome the leadership demonstrated by Premier MacLauchlan on access to reproductive services in PEI: https://t.co/r3Z7dzA2Ze
