Canadians were scammed to the tune of $61 million last year, a decrease of $10 million from the previous year.
That’s from the Better Business Bureau as they released their national Top 10 Scam list for 2015.
President and CEO for the Atlantic Provinces Peter Moorhouse says the most reported scam was from criminals pretending to be the Canada Revenue Agency demanding money.
17,000 Canadians reported they had been affected by that single scam last year, with total financial loss of $2.9 million.
The most lucrative scam was Catphishing, the name given to online romantic scams – where Canadians lost $15.6 million.
Moorhouse says for Atlantic Canada the frequency of the “Advance Fee Loan” scams was alarming, even though they cost Canadians only 990,000 dollars.
