Province To Strengthen Animal Protection Laws

The provincial government wants to see changes to strengthen animal protection.

They plan to meet with stakeholders this spring to develop a new strategies.

The Department of Environment and Local Government says they hope to develop a standard of care for dogs. This will assist NB SPCA animal protection officers in determining whether or not a dog is being properly treated in the home.

Minister Brian Kenney says just over a year ago they banned 24 hour tethering of dogs and also increased penalties for other violations. Kenney says they hope to build on those positive initiatives already in place.
