Major Fire On St. George Street In Moncton

Five people have been left homeless after a major fire in the Dolma foods building on St. George Street.

Moncton Fire Platoon Chief Rob Brine says they arrived on scene just before midnight. There was smoke coming from the building, but it took them awhile to find the fire because it was burning in between the walls and floors.

Once the flames began to show, it was very difficult to fight, because of the metal roof and metal siding.

Brine says there was an explosion at one point after the heat built up inside the attic, and that cause a flashover.

They were forced to switch to defensive mode to try and protect the nearby buildings.

He says the building is a total write-off.

There were two businesses in the building, Dolma Foods and a sushi restaurant…and also three apartments on the upper floor.

All of the tenants received assistance and no one was hurt.

Moncton Fire remains on scene, and St. George Street, between Lutz and Highfield, is closed until further notice due to that fire.
