Anti-Poverty Group Likes Idea Of Guaranteed Annual Income

A guaranteed annual income to replace the patchwork social assistance programs is a good idea the federal government should consider, according to the Common Front for Social Justice.

The idea has been advocated by former Conservative Senator Hugh Segal, who also served as Chief of Staff to then Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, and it’s being endorsed by the Common Front’s Provincial Co-Ordinator Jean-Claude Basque.

Basque says a guaranteed annual income would also be less costly to administer.

Saint John-Rothesay M-P Wayne Long says reducing poverty in the city is a priority for him in 2016 and adds we have to take a hard look at what’s working and what’s not. He likens the process to ripping sheets off the bed.
