Arbitrator Rules Fredericton Police Officer Be Dismissed

Arbitrator Cedric Haines has ordered Constable Jeff Smiley be dismissed from the Fredericton Police Department for domestic assault and breaching the code of professional conduct.

A hearing before the New Brunswick Police Commission was held following a domestic assault investigation that was launched by Police Chief Leanne Fitch against Smiley in February of last year.

The arbitrator concluded a number of domestic assaults had taken place. He also determined Smiley violated the code of professional conduct when he tried to persuade another police officer to not disclose he had firearms when was supposed to have turned them and had firearms when his licence had expired.

Smiley was awarded the Star of Courage by the Governor-General in 2013 for saving a woman’s life after her car plunged into the river.
