Websites with videos such as Youtube or Netflix take up a lot of bandwidth which is why Codiac Transpo has decided to block access to them.
WiFi has been available on buses for the past seven years but it was only intended for light use.
Senior Transit Planner for Codiac Transpo Marie-Claire Pierce says a lot of complaints have been coming in lately from bus riders.
“Folks were calling us and saying they couldn’t access Wi-Fi on their way to work and they wanted to check emails. When we looked at it, we saw there was heavy use of Netflix and the likes,” says Pearce.
Pierce says equipment will be installed over the next few months, until the entire fleet of buses has been upgraded.
