Educare Responds to Sudden Closure

Officials from Educare West says they are devastated by the closure of their daycare centre on St. George Boulevard.

In a letter to parents that was posted to Facebook and was also emailed to our newsroom, it states, “Today was a very hard day for EduCare Administration and Educators. Today, we lost everything. Today, you lost a dependable and safe place for your child to be.”

In the letter, officials says the the reason the province was denied access to their centre on September 4th, was because a centre Operator was not on site and the educators were not comfortable in answering questions about confidential files and confidential information pertaining to the administration portion of EduCare.

They say there is much more to this story than is being revealed.

The letter also states that parents whose children attended Educare’s St. George Blvd location, who would like to pick up their child’s belongings. The centre will be open today 12pm until 1pm. Parents will also be contacted about receiving a refund in full.

Educare was forced to close this week, after an investigation by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. A statement from the provincial government says during a visit to the centre on September 4th, they were denied access.

A statement was received by our newsroom from Leah Fitzgerald, who is a Communications Officer for the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, It says, “The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s primary concern is, and will continue to be, the safety, security and development of children. Where the Minister is of the opinion that a daycare is of inadequate quality or dangerous destructive or damaging to the children attending a daycare, the Minister is required to take action. The Minister may decide to direct the operator to terminate operation. This was the decision made relating to Educare for Kids West and Educare for kids West 2.”

a provincial investigation began at Educare for Kids West Daycare on St. George Boulevard in the spring.

Parents were notified and were also told in July that the province granted the daycare a three-month temporary permit to operate while changes were made.

Provincial employees were denied access to the daycare earlier this month which forced the closure.
