Common Council voting to hire the former chairman of the National Energy Board Gaétan Caron as a consultant to help the city prepare its submission to the NEB for the Energy East pipeline hearings.
Saint John fire chief Kevin Clifford stepping up to the podium and telling council this is a huge opportunity for this community. He says “I’m like everybody else, I hesitate to look at consultants when you don’t need them. I think this a opportunity that would reap rewards tenfold both from emergency preparedness and community benefit.”
The cost for this consultant, we’re told, is $180 an hour up to a maximum of $30,000.
The city has been granted intervenor status in the pipeline hearings.
The vote was not unanimous with councillor-at-large Shirley McAlary the only one to vote against.
