About 25 per cent of the people in New Brunswick are on the verge of getting type 2 diabetes.
That’s higher than the rest of Canada but it can be prevented.
If you’re overweight and over the age of 40, you could be at risk of getting type two diabetes.
But Spokesperson for the Canadian Diabetes Association in Atlantic Canada Jake Reid says if you act now, the disease is preventable.
“Diet and exercise, and taking care of your health, watching what you eat, making sure you get enough exercise every week so you’re able to lose that weight, and just taking care of yourself,” says Reid.
Sometimes getting the disease is unavoidable because it runs in your family or if you’re a woman who has given birth to babies over 9 pounds or if you have had gestational diabetes.
Reid recommends taking two minutes to take the test and find out if you are at risk of type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes.
