Moncton Man Takes On City Council Over Downtown Centre

Not everybody is happy with the City of Moncton’s recent announcement they will build a downtown centre.

Monctonian David Hackett says evidence suggests a downtown entertainment centre won’t turn out to be the economic catalyst many hope it will be.

Hackett will be presenting to City Council tonight in opposition to the centre.

“These kind of projects are not economically viable, there’s no net economic benefit to doing this, and second my major concern is there’s been no public input,” says Hackett.

He says there’s been no public consultations, either by poll, plebiscite or ballot box vote.

He says the way Council handled the proposals is a good example.

“The public did not see either of the two proposals until the very meeting that Council voted to accept one,” says Hackett “How is that not egregious? How is that not contemptuous of the public’s interaction in this process?”

Hackett says the overwhelming body of evidence suggests a downtown centre is not the right way to stimulate the economy and create jobs.
