Gallant Government Releases New Official Languages Plan

The Gallant Government has released its official road-map to guide language policy in the province.

The plan, which is called Official Bilingualism: A Fundamental Value, focuses on four areas: language of service, language of work, development of the two official linguistic communities, and knowledge of the Official Languages Act.

The language of service policy is, according to the document, “still largely misunderstood or inappropriately applied” despite being several years old. One of the objectives in this area is for the government to establish ways to measure the progress of this policy which currently can’t be done.

When it comes to the language of work policy, which is giving the opportunity for someone working in the public sector to work in their official language of choice, one of the goals is to have employers create an environment where employees feel they’re able to do this.

Minister responsible for Official Languages Donald Arsenault says the plan indicates the government’s commitment to official bilingualism and will help to strengthen the public service.

This plan will be reviewed in five years time.
